Not Such a Harsh Toke, Actually

My apology to Steve Stecklow & James Bandler ...

For this.

Which was about this.

Steve & James -

Please accept my apologies for my response to your piece. I read it over, more carefully, and I was engaging in an insane amount of transference from all the other ridiculous stuff being said about the project.

I do wish there was more acknowledgment of the sincerity and common sense behind getting Free Software and open software systems into the hands of children in developing areas -- where economic growth will benefit American businesses. Some small portion of these kids will end up programming in HTML, PHP, Python and Pearl and learning to administer Linux and key Free Software applications.

This is socially, economically, politically and otherwise innovative. It is good for democracy too in some of the few remaining places that good thing is having trouble getting hold. We regard that thing too lightly, I fear.

The Gates | Otellini axis directly hurts us deeply. To me, it is a particularly American shame.

Respectfully,
-Sam
